Terrence Boyd lifted Rapid Vienna into an early lead with his 12th goal of the season, but Dynamo Kyiv stormed back to win Thursday’s UEFA Europa League match, 3-1, and knock the U.S. national team forward and his club out of the competition.
Boyd scored in just the sixth minute at Kyiv’s Olympic Stadium when he finished off a cross from Austrian midfielder Guido Burgstaller. It was Boyd’s fifth goal of the tournament.

Dynamo leveled the score in the 22nd minute, though, and then took the lead six minutes later. Rapid needed a victory to finish second in Group G. Instead, it was eliminated with a 1-2-3 record. Dynamo (3-2-1) will join Belgium’s KRC Genk (4-0-2) in the round-of-32.
Americans Brad Friedel and Aron Johannsson will move on to the Europa Leauge’s knockout rounds, which are scheduled to kick off in February.
Friedel, who plays primarily in cup competitions, backstopped and captained Tottenham Hotspur to a 4-1 victory over visiting Anzhi Makhachkala on Thursday. Spanish striker Roberto Soldado notched a hat trick. The Londoners finished the group stage a perfect 6-0-0. Anzhi came in second in Group K at 2-2-2.
Johannsson came off the bench for AZ Alkmaar in a 2-2 tie at PAOK Thessaloniki. Both teams already had clinched their spots in the next round. The U.S. forward entered the match in the 74th minute, shortly after AZ (3-0-3) had taken the lead. But PAOK’s Stelios Pozoglou scored in stoppage time to force a draw.
