As part of the ongoing effort to combat coronavirus in Italy, AS Roma announced it would be donating more than $215,000 to a hospital in need of medical supplies. Lazzaro Spallanzani Hospital in Rome will use part of the money for three intensive care ventilators and eight beds, and five sub-intensive care pulmonary ventilators.

The funds are comprised of one day’s pay from each first-team player and coach, bringing the team’s fundraising efforts to nearly $500,000. “The players and coaching staff wanted to do something very meaningful for the city and the people suffering in this country, said AS Roma CEO Guido Fienga. “At moments like this, it’s important that we all take on our responsibilities and do what we can to help.”

The Lazzaro Spallanzani Hospital has been on the front lines of treating the coronavirus pandemic in Italy, where there have been 41,035 confirmed cases and 3,405 deaths. There are more than 218,700 confirmed cases in 147 countries worldwide. In the U.S., the number of cases have surpassed 15,000.
