The Birdsville Races, first held in 1882, are a two-day horse racing event held annually in September in the Channel Country of Central West Queensland, in Birdsville, Australia. The small town was originally known as Diamantina Crossing and was established in the 1800s as a center for stock routes for cattle country and as a customs collection point. Today it has a population of about 100 people. Photographer Sharon Chapman went Down Under to get up close and personal for this year's competition.
