It was August 2004 and Angela Chittenden was about to launch her own line of swimwear. The tk native was no stranger to the industry, having modeled swimsuits all over the world, but this was her opportunity to break out as a designer. She chose Miami Swim Week to debut the line, which Chittenden dubbed Beach Bunny, and headed to the swim show with her mom. What happened next would change her life forever.
"Sports Illustrated LAUNCHED my brand," she recalls. "Back in 2004, my mother and I took my first Beach Bunny collection to the Miami Swim Show and set up our trade show booth at the convention. I did not get even ONE order that trip! Except for two very important people (MJ Day and Diane Smith) spent an hour with me choosing every suit in the collection for their SI photo shoot! I was the happiest girl on earth after that show, even though I still didn't even have any orders. That year, Beach Bunny had three DOUBLE page spreads in SI and Beach Bunny had officially launched for the world to see. I will forever be grateful to SI for believing in us and allowing me to be where I am today!"
Since that fateful day in Miami, Beach Bunny has grown into one of the leaders in the swimwear industry and has been worn by celebrities including Kim Kardashian Hayden Panettiere, Jenny McCarthy, Joanna Krupa, Ashley Tisdale and Avril Lavigne. It also has kept strong to its SI roots with model Chrissy Teigen set to partner up with Beach Bunny to launch her own line of bridal swimwear. In the meantime, Chittenden is excited for SI Swimsuit's 50th anniversary issue, out in February. "The 50th anniversary is a symbol of the beauty, excitement and awareness that SI brings to the swim industry, she says. "The swim business is such a fun, sexy branch of the fashion world and it's so nice that we all have something to get excited for and celebrate every February!"
SwimDaily: Where did the name of your company come from?
Angela Chittenden: I always used to describe the type of girl who likes to make a fashion statement at the pool as a "Beach Bunny", so what better name for our swimwear brand?!
SD: What new products are you most excited for?
AC: Beach Bunny has some amazing new Neoprene bikinis and wet suits that are coming out this spring that will be PERFECT for the "surfer girl" in all of us!
SD: Where would you like to see your company in 10 years?
AC: I would love to see Beach Bunny in more malls across the US, as well as international expansion. I would also love to see our customer base broaden and convince more women across the world that they can ROCK a Beach Bunny suit as well.
SD:What philosophies are important to the success of your company?
AC: 1) Never be afraid to take risks. They can take your company to the next level; 2) Know exactly who your customer is and what she likes! She will love you for it; 3) Love and respect the people you work with! It's not one person that makes a company successful, it's an awesome TEAM!
SD: What has it been like working with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit? What does your company do to prepare for the Swimsuit year to come?
AC: It's my favorite time of year when the themes for SI get emailed to me! It's like a "project" that our entire office gets into! After I see the themes, I dream up all kinds of ideas to create for them! It's also so fun because there are NO limits on what you can put on a SI supermodel!
