Wimbledon Day 4 recap: Federer puts on a show, Kvitova rolls as seeds fall

LONDON – Catch up on the news and results from Day 4 at Wimbledon on Thursday.

Roger Federer eases into the third round, goes viral: The No. 2 has looked sharp through his first two matches. He dismissed Sam Querrey with a 6–4, 6–2, 6–2 win and hit the shot of the tournament so far with this front-side tweener lob:

Said Querrey: "He's got that aura around him. Today he hit that shot between his legs. He hit some amazing passing shots, hit some half volleys. He hits shots that other guys don't hit. You want to go over and give him a high five sometimes, but you can't do that."

As Petra Kvitova rolls, the bottom half of the draw softens up: The book on Kvitova is that she's vulnerable in the early rounds of a tournament. The confidence usually isn't there and she needs a few matches to shake the rust off. But Wimbledon is clearly different. The two-time champion has lost just three games in two matches, beating Kurumi Nara 6–2, 6–0 to advance to the third round.

But while Kvitova has rolled the remainder of the bottom half of the draw has seen seeds tumble left and right. On Tuesday it was No. 3 Simona Halep and No. 12 Eugenie Bouchard who made exits. On Thursday, No. 8 Ekaterina Makarova lost to Magdalena Rybarikova, No. 17 Elina Svitolina lost to Casey Dellacqua and No. 25 Alize Cornet lost to Olga Govortsova. Kvitova's next opponent, No. 28 Jelena Jankovic needed three sets to beat Evgeniya Rodina.

Andy Murray puts on a clinic to beat Robin Haase: Their past matches have been tough, physical affairs. Not today. Murray rolled through with a 6–1, 6–1, 6–4 win in less than 90 minutes. He plays Andreas Seppi, who beat Borna Coric in five sets, in the third round.

Madison Keys advances to the third round: Keys had no problem with the quick turnaround from the completion of her first round match on Wednesday, beating Elizaveta Kulichkova 6–4, 7-6. She plays No. 78 Tatjana Maria. A win would put her into the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time.

Caroline Wozniacki fights off Denisa Allertova and then the Italian press: After winning 6–1, 7–6 to advance, Wozniacki was asked about her upcoming third round match against Italy's Camila Giorgi. She answered the first question, but surprisingly cut off any further questionsa bout her big-hitting and tricky opponent.

Q. Camila Giorgi, a very instinctive player, she is probably stronger or more efficient ‑‑
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Are we in Camila's press conference or are we in mine? I'm starting to not know exactly. You can ask her.
