Stan Wawrinka, not Roger Federer, to carry Swiss flag at opening ceremonies
After much speculation as to whether Roger Federer would serve as the flag-bearer for Switzerland for the third straight Olympics, it turns out the honor will go to his good friend and doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka. The honor had been offered to the seven-time Wimbledon champion, but Federer stepped aside so his gold-medal winning other half could step in.
“I’m proud of carrying the Swiss flag," Wawrinka said. "It reminds me of the great moment where I received the medal in Beijing with Roger Federer.”
Speaking of their Beijing gold medal in doubles, let's take a moment to relive one of the all-time greatest/weirdest team celebrations in the history of Olympic tennis (click forward to 6:06 for match point):
I can't wait to see what those two whip out this year. Can the "Stan, you're en fuego" celebration be topped? I think not.
