MELBOURNE, Australia -- It wasn't Venus Williams' best day. She started strong against No. 22 seed Ekaterina Makarova, taking the first set. But her talented opponent, who knocked out Serena Williams in the Australian Open two years ago, raised her level and battled back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round.

But it was still an encouraging couple of weeks for Venus, who made the final at the Hobart International and showed some of her vintage aggressive form against Makarova.

Venus even sent out a reminder that, at 33, she's more than big serves and forehands. Watch her show off her feather-light touch with this forehand drop-shot winner. Here's hoping there's more where that came from.
