Williams and Wang held serve throughout almost the entirety of the third set until the 12th and final game, which saw Wang break Williams and win the match. Williams won the last of her seven Australian Open titles in 2017, but hasn't added a major championship since, falling twice each in the Wimbledon and U.S. Open finals. Coco Gauff knocked off defending champion Naomi Osaka, 6-3, 6-4 in the round’s other major upset. This served as a rematch from the third round at the U.S. Open last September, where Osaka defeated Gauff in straight sets. On Friday, Osaka made 30 unforced errors, to Gauff’s 17. The 15-year-old Gauff will meet fellow American and 14-seed Sofia Kenin in the fourth round.
