MLB Field of Dreams Countdown: Five Classic Baseball Movies to Stream

MLB's Field of Dreams game returns on August 11. Count down the days until the Cubs and the Reds face off in Iowa with five classic baseball movies to stream.

The inaugural Field of Dreams game was a hit, with fans celebrating the sentiment that came from playing an MLB in the middle of a cornfield in Iowa. This year, the celebrated game based on the 1989 movie Field of Dreams will feature the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds.

The game will be on August 11 with coverage on Fox Sports. As baseball fans everywhere prepare for another round of nostalgia, here are five movies to stream as you count down the days till the Field of Dreams returns.

Moneyball

One of the most famous baseball movies of the last decade, Moneyball is a story that any baseball fan knows. Based on the nonfiction novel by Michael Lewis, the film follows Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane as he revamps the team's approaching to drafting players. 

The movie has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and is a must-watch for anyone looking for some baseball nostalgia ahead of the Field of Dreams game—because how can you not be romantic about baseball?

Major League

This comedy released in 1989 tells the story of Cleveland's major league team and its new owner, who tries to tank the team's record and move the club to Miami. Naturally, the season doesn't go quite as planned. 

Two Major League sequel movies followed the first, though neither of them became quite as popular as the original.

A League of Their Own

A League of Their Own is another baseball classic, loved for its unique portrayal of a women's baseball league (the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League). The movie stars Tom Hank and Madonna, and it grossed over $132 million when it was released. 

The movie is being remade as a television series as well to honor its 30th anniversary.

Bad News Bears

Another baseball comedy, Bad News Bears follows a former player (now a grumpy, heavy-drinking pool cleaner) who is asked to coach a youth baseball team. The iconic movie cover features the new coach and one of two young girls he recruits to join his team: 11-year-old star pitcher Amanda Wurlitzer. 

The film was followed by a CBS television series that lasted just a year.

This recent film features a cast full of MLB stars old and new. Starring Derek Jeter and narrated by Kevin Costner (the star of the original Field of Dreams movie), the film includes footage from the likes Bryce Harper, Nolan Ryan and Justin Verlander as it dives into the time it takes for a fastball to reach home plate.
