Stanford (2-2) was ranked third in the preseason coaches poll and moved up a spot after taking two of three at Cal State Fullerton last weekend. But the Cardinal lost their home opener on Tuesday night in advance of Friday's opener of a three-game series at Sunken Diamond against Rice (2-2). The Owls have won two in a row after dropping their first two games. Sophomore outfielder Braden Montgomery is off to a hot start for Stanford, going six-for-14 with a homer and four RBI in four games. In the process, he's extended his streak of getting on base to 30 straight games. Malcolm Moore has three homers already for the Cardinal. Pierce Gallo is five-for-10 in three games for Rice while Connor Walsh is six-for-14 while playing all four games.

Stanford freshman Toran O'Harran surrendered a first-inning grand slam as California cruised to an 8-4 non-conference win on Tuesday. Owen Cobb belted a two-run homer in the seventh for the Cardinal but it wasn't enough. Joey Dixon struck out six in three innings of relief but was touched up for two runs.
The Owls are on the road for the first time after getting a 3-1 win over Sam Houston on Wednesday. Guy Garibay Jr. made it a 3-0 game in the eighth with a two-run home run after Jack Riedel opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first. Starter Mauricio Rodriguez fanned three in three-and-one-third innings while reliever Krishna Raj evened his record at 1-1 with one-and-two-third scoreless innings.
This is the first time Rice and Stanford have played since a four-game series in Palo Alto in February 2018, swept by the Cardinal.
