Michigan State entered the Big Ten tournament as the No. 4 seed before losing to 13th-seeded Ohio State 68-58 on March 10. Hauser scored 15 points while Walker, Hoggard and Jaden Akins had 10 each as the Spartans dug a hole it couldn't climb out of with poor first-half shooting (31.0%).
USC cut a 17-deficit to four in the closing seconds in a 77-72 loss to Arizona State, also an NCAA tournament team, in the Pac-12 tourney quarterfinals on March 9. Tre White and Reese Dixon-Waters scored 16 points each for the Trojans while Ellis and Kobe Johnson had 15 apiece.
The teams are tied 3-3 all-time, with Michigan State winning the most recent meeting 74-69 in the second round of the 2009 NCAA tournament in Minneapolis. The Spartans are in their 25th consecutive Big Dance while the Trojans were selected for the third straight year.
