As was the case last week in Singapore, this is the first time F1 has returned to Japan since the global COVID-19 pandemic, as the Japanese Grand Prix was scrubbed in both 2020 and 2021. Valtteri Bottas was the winner the last time the race was contested in 2019.
Max Verstappen, who can clinch his second straight world championship with a win and the fastest lap on Sunday, was sixth-fastest in FP1 and moved up to third in FP2 with a best lap of 1:42.786.
The Suzuka Circuit is 3.608 miles around with 18 turns and the notable overpass on a three-quarter-mile straight on the back of the course that crosses over the front portion of the circuit.
Michael Schumacher won a record six times at Suzuka, while Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, who is retiring after this season, have four victories there. Hamilton added a win at Fuji in 2007.
