Defending champion Daniel van Tonder leads the field at the Investec South African Open Championship at Blair Atholl Golf & Equestian Estate in Thursday's first round.

Daniel van Tonder won his first South African Open last year and leads the field into Thursday's first round at Blair Atholl Golf & Equestrian Estate in Johannesburg as the DP World Tour enters the second week of its 2022-23 season. There are two events on the tour this week, with the Australian Open also starting on Thursday. The 8,161-yard layout is a challenging one, playing at par-72 this week, and is the second tour event in Johannesburg in as many weeks. Dan Bradbury won the Joburg Open at Houghton Golf Club last weekend and will be in the field this week as well.

Last December's event was not part of the DP World Tour. Played at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, van Tonder earned a one-stroke victory over Oliver Bekker to win the title. Player won a record 13 South African Open titles between 1956-81.

There have been 11 consecutive first-time winners at the South African Open. The last multiple winner came in 2010 when Ernie Els won for the fifth time, beating South African countryman Retief Goosen by one stroke.

This year marks the first time the tournament is being played at Blair Atholl. Branden Grace set the scoring record in 2020 with a 21-under-par 263 at Randpark Golf Club, while Els holds the record to par at 24-under-par at Humewood Golf Club in 2005.
