Defending champion United States takes the next step after dominating group play when it faces Czechia in the quarterfinals of the IIHF world junior championships.

The United States (4-0-0-0) snuffed out its competition in group B play at the 2022 IIHF world junior championships, surrendering a tournament-low four goals. Two of those came on Sunday in the 3-2 win over Sweden that clinched the top spot in the group.

Its opponent to open the medal round is Czechia (1-0-1-2), which squandered a chance to avoid the U.S. in the quarterfinals when it lost to Latvia on Sunday and fell to fourth place in group A. The Americans have played in the last three gold-medal games and broke through with a victory over Canada to win the program's fifth gold medal overall and their first since 2017.

Kaiden Mbereko has done the bulk of the goaltending for the U.S., playing three games and posting a 1.33 goals-against average with a .939 save percentage. Offensively, the squad has produced 22 goals, four each from Matthew Coronato and Carter Mazur. Thomas Bordeleau leads the team with seven points on a goal and six assists.

The top scorer for Czechia, which was outscored 18-11 in the group stage, is Jan Mysak with three. Martin Rvsavy had two goals. Jan Bednar surrendered 11 goals in 165 minutes in net with a 4.00 GAA and .851 save percentage. Tomas Suchanek played 79 minutes and allowed five goals with a .915 save percentage.
