Czechia (2-0-1-2) is playing with house money at the IIHF world junior championship after its stunning upset of the United States in the quarterfinals. Next up for the Czechs after dethroning the defending champs is a semifinal date on Friday with host Canada at Rogers Place in Edmonton. Canada eliminated Switzerland with a 6-3 quarterfinal victory on Wednesday and is the last unbeaten team remaining after the U.S. loss. The winner of the Czechia-Canada matchup advances to the gold medal game on Sunday against the winner of the second semifinal between Scandinavian rivals Sweden and Finland later Friday. The losers will face off for the bronze medal.

Czechia took the lead against the U.S. at the 7:34 mark of the second period when Petr Hauser scored and took a 3-1 lead just more than three minutes later on a goal from Matyas Sapovaliv.
The Americans cut the gap to 3-2 midway through the third period before Jiri Kulich secured the victory for Czechia with an empty-net tally at 18:28. Kulich also had two assists while goalie Tomas Suchanek made 28 saves.
Canada blitzed Switzerland with four goals in the first period en route to its quarterfinal win. While the Swiss kept tournament goal-scoring leader Mason McTavish in check, Logan Stankoven scored twice for the Canadians in the win.
Canada has a record 33 medals at the World Juniors, including 18 golds. Czechia has won three medals, two golds and a bronze, since the former Czechoslovakia broke up in 1992.
