The Los Angeles Angels (46-63) had to settle for a split over the weekend in against the Mariners and also had a scare Sunday involving reigning American League MVP Shohei Ohtani. Meanwhile, the Oakland Athletics (41-68) were swept at home by the Giants in a two-game weekend series and have lost five of their last seven games.
Ohtani collided with Mariners pitcher Marco Gonzales behind home plate and was moving with a limp, but was said to have no major injuries after the game. Los Angeles leads the season series with the Athletics 6-4, but Oakland took two of three in Anaheim last week.

The Angels fell in the finale on Sunday, 6-3. Meanwhile, the A's fell on Sunday to San Francisco 6-4 in a game they never led. Seth Brown hit his team-high 17th home run in the loss.
Oakland will start the series with left-hander Cole Irvin on the mound. In 19 starts, Irvin is 6-8 with a 3.04 ERA. He lost at Anaheim on Tuesday, allowing three runs, two earned, in six innings.
José Suarez, who won the game on Tuesday, faces off with Irvin again for Los Angeles. The lefty is 3-4 with a 4.55 ERA in 13 appearances and 11 starts. Suarez allowed one unearned run in five innings against the A's with five strikeouts and has won two straight starts.
