The Arizona Diamondbacks (49-59) played small ball on Monday to open their four-game series at Chase Field against the Pittsburgh Pirates (44-65). The series continues Tuesday night. Arizona has won three of four games and sits in fourth place in the National League West, while the Pirates have dropped three of four since sweeping the Brewers last week. Pittsburgh is last in the NL Central.
The teams have split four meetings this season after the Pirates took two of three at PNC Park in early June. Both clubs are coming off 100-loss seasons, but have improved so far in 2022.

On Monday, the Diamondbacks played some throwback baseball, using an error, a stolen base and a bunt single to manufacture the go-ahead run in the sixth inning before beating Pittsburgh 3-0. Zac Gallen worked seven scoreless innings for Arizona, striking out eight.
Rookie left-hander Tommy Henry is set to make his second start for Arizona. He lost his Major League debut at Cleveland on Wednesday, allowing four runs on four hits in five innings.
Right-hander Zach Thompson is next in line for the Pirates. Thompson is 3-8 with a 5.15 ERA. His last win was on June 5 and he's lost four straight decisions. On Thursday, he got a no decision in a win over the Brewers after allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
