The Cubs broke through first in the opening game when Nelson Velázquez hit a solo home run and Christopher Morel added a two-run shot two batters later. That gave Keegan Thompson enough run support as he went six solid innings for the win.

The Nationals couldn't get much going in the first game and have now lost six straight games. They have won just twice in the last 12 games and have fallen to 36-75. It has been a tough season, but Tuesday they will look to even the series with the Cubs.
