Tonight the Pittsburgh Pirates start a nine-game home stand with a three-game mid-week series with the Boston Red Sox. The Pirates have won three-straight games at PNC Park bringing their home record to 24-29 this season, but with four consecutive losses and eight losses in their last ten games, their slim playoff chances are dwindling by the day. Boston comes into this series having won three of their last four games including taking two of three against the American East division-leading New York Yankees over the weekend.

Despite scoring only eight runs over the weekend against New York, the Red Sox held the Yankees to just four runs over the three-game series and held the Yankees to just two hits in Sunday’s 3-0 win behind Michael Wacha’s nine strikeout performance in seven innings. The ten-year veteran threw just 89 pitches in the win.
The Red Sox will start Nick Pavetta (8-9, 4.51 ERA) who is looking for his first win since June going a span of eight starts without a victory including a treacherous July where the 29-year-old right-hander went 0-3 with a 9.38 ERA.
The Pirates send Mitch Keller (4-8, 4.25 ERA) to the mound looking for his second win in as many starts. Keller earned a win on Wednesday over the Arizona Diamondbacks striking out three batters over 5.1 innings.
Red Sox left fielder Alex Verdugo is hitting .406 with eight extra-base hits over his last ten games. The 26-year-old has recorded a hit in seven of his last nine games.
