The 2023 FISU Winter World University Games keeps rolling through Jan. 22. These games are an 11-day competition that brings collegiate athletes together from all over the world. This is the second time the games have been held in Lake Placid, New York. The first time was in 1972. The most recent time the games were held in the United States was for the 1993 Summer Games held in Buffalo. All events this year will take place in Lake Placid and surrounding towns.

One of the first competitions on Tuesday will be the 1,500-meter speed skating competition. This will be a middle distance race for the women's competition and a sprint for the men's. This is equivalent to a one-mile race.
The games fittingly take place at the Speed Skating Oval in Lake Placid proper. This site was also featured in the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Games. That includes the 'Miracle on Ice' game. Come for the history, stay for the up-and-coming Winter Olympics athletes.
