Football Returns with the Hall of Fame Game

Plus, the Mets and Braves kick off a huge four-game series.

Football season is officially here!

The Hall of Fame Game gets the NFL’s preseason underway tonight in Canton, Ohio, beginning the month-long march to the first week of the 2022 regular season. Will it be the most well-played game you’ve ever seen? Of course not, but if you’re a football junkie, it’s something to wet your beak until things really heat up soon.

We’ve also got a pair of divisional rivalries to look forward to on the diamond tonight, as well as the continued playoff push in the WNBA.

Here’s what I’m watching today.

A quick note: Due to COVID-19, sports schedules are fluid and subject to change.

MUST WATCH:

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Las Vegas Raiders

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson

Yes, it’s just the Hall of Fame Game. But it’s good to have football on TV again. The Jaguars are getting a fresh start under Doug Pederson after the disastrous Urban Meyer experiment, but you won’t see starting QB Trevor Lawrence or talented RB Travis Etienne in this game as both are expected to sit out. We might see the Raiders’ starters for a series or two, but the Hall of Fame Game is always more about a celebration of football’s return than getting starters real reps.

LINEUP:

• Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants | The Giants’ freefall has continued after the All-Star Break, as San Francisco is now three games under .500 and 5.5 games out of the last wild card after losing 11 of 14 to start the second half. The road doesn’t get any easier this afternoon when they face off against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers, who now have baseball’s best record. 3:45 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Bay Area/SportsNet LA/MLB Network, watch on fuboTV

• Phoenix Mercury at Connecticut Sun | A triple-double from Alyssa Thomas on Tuesday night helped the Sun make quick work of the Mercury in the first of two games this week between these two franchises. Connecticut goes for the sweep and seven wins in its last nine games. Meanwhile, a win for the Diana Taurasi and the Mercury would go a long way towards locking in a playoff berth. 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2, watch on fuboTV

• Las Vegas Aces at Dallas Wings | The Wings got their best win of the season earlier this week when they took down the Sky in Chicago behind 46 combined points from Teaira McCowan and Marina Mabrey. After beating the top team in the league Tuesday, can they complete a huge week by beating the No. 2 Aces back home in Dallas? 8 p.m. ET, ESPN3

HIDDEN GEM:

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets

A huge reason for the Mets’ 3.5 game lead in the NL East has been their dominance all season long against division rivals. Buck Showalter’s club is now 33–13 in divisional games this season, the second-best mark in baseball. But Atlanta beefed up its roster at the trade deadline and seems poised to make a push for the top spot. That push could start tonight with this four-game series between the two rivals, and the Braves send 13–4 right-hander Kyle Wright to the bump to thing started.
