WNBA Regular Season Reaches Final Week

Plus, Gerrit Cole looks for revenge against the Mariners.

You’re telling me there’s three more WNBA games tonight and all of them have playoff implications? Sign me up. The Wings locked up a spot in the postseason last night with a win over the Liberty, but two playoff berths are still up for grabs, as is seeding. Tuning in all week to these season-defining games should be tons of fun.

Also on tonight’s docket: a rematch of aces in the American League who faced off just last week.

Here’s what I’m watching today.

A quick note: Due to COVID-19, sports schedules are fluid and subject to change.

MUST WATCH:

Seattle Storm at Chicago Sky

Courtney Vandersloot of the Chicago Sky

Sue Bird played her final regular-season home game over the weekend, and while she went out with a loss it was still a remarkable atmosphere to send off arguably the best player in the WNBA’s history. Whether Bird and the Storm will play in Seattle again this season may depend on whether they can hold onto their top-four spot in the standings, as they currently sit just a half-game above the Mystics for the fourth home-court advantage spot in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Sky could potentially clinch the league’s regular season title tonight with a win after a pair of huge victories over the weekend.

LINEUP:

• Tampa Bay Rays at Milwaukee Brewers | Two teams in the thick of the playoff push face off in Milwaukee for two quick games this week. The Brewers have been treading water lately and dealt top reliever Josh Hader at the trade deadline, but still have an elite rotation and will be a tough out should they get to October. 8:10 p.m. ET, Bally Sports Sun/Bally Sports Wisconsin, watch on fuboTV

• Atlanta Dream at Las Vegas Aces | After spoiling Sue Bird’s Seattle send-off, the Aces look to keep their slim hopes of claiming the regular season title alive with a win tonight against a Dream squad that also really needs a victory. Atlanta currently sits just one game above Minnesota, New York and Los Angeles, who are all pushing for the league’s last playoff spot. 10 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network, watch on fuboTV

• Connecticut Sun at Los Angeles Sparks | The Sparks’ final-week schedule was already set to be grueling before they were forced to sleep in an airport due to travel delays. But the Sparks are back home in L.A. now and have a huge game in front of them tonight against the Sun. A win could move them into a playoff spot with other results tonight. 10:30 p.m. ET, NBA TV, watch on fuboTV

HIDDEN GEM:

New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners

The Yankees finally got back in the win column last night, but lost Matt Carpenter to a broken foot in the first inning to continue the team’s injury woes. As the Bronx Bombers’ lineup tries to recover from that, they’ll have to face Mariners top deadline acquisition Luis Castillo, who silenced Yankee hitters when the teams faced off last week. The opposite could be said for Yanks ace Gerrit Cole, who got lit up for six runs in the first inning.
