Serena Williams Takes on Belinda Bencic in Canada

Plus, the Mercury and Lynx go head-to-head with a playoff spot on the line.

We promised a potential pitcher’s duel between the Mariners and Yankees last night, and the two teams’ aces delivered a classic that took until the 13th inning to see the first (and only) run cross home plate.

Tonight, we’ve got yet another huge game with playoff implications in the WNBA to lead the slate, plus a pair of soccer games worth tuning in for and the surprising Orioles continuing their playoff push.

But the headliner features a legend winding down her career.

A quick note: Due to COVID-19, sports schedules are fluid and subject to change.

National Bank Open: Serena Williams vs. Belinda Bencic

Serena Williams

Earlier this week Serena Williams announced her intentions to retire from tennis. The 40-year-old is a global superstar and winner of 23 major singles titles. But her final stretch of tournaments begins in Canada, where she won her first-round match to register her only singles victory so far in 2022.

Tonight, she faces a stern test in Toronto from the No. 12-ranked player in the world Belinda Bencic, who beat Williams in this same tournament back in 2015 en route to the title.

• UEFA Super Cup: Real Madrid vs. Eintracht Frankfurt | The winners of the Champions League and Europa League from last season face off in the annual Super Cup, with a trophy on the line. Frankfurt looked thoroughly overmatched in its Bundesliga opener against Bayern Munich last week, and there’s no doubt they’ll need to be in better form against Los Blancos. Carlo Ancelotti is expected to field Real’s best side for this one, so it won’t be easy for Frankfurt to hang in. 3 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network/Univision, watch on fuboTV

• Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles | The Orioles’ surprise playoff push hasn’t slowed down since they traded closer Jorge López and slugger Trey Mancini at the deadline. In fact, the Birds have now won seven of eight games since Aug. 2 to move themselves just a half game out of the final wild-card spot. Can they inch a bit closer tonight and finish a sweep of their division-rival Blue Jays? 7:05 p.m. ET, Sportsnet/MASN, watch on fuboTV

• New York Liberty at Dallas Wings | The Wings are officially playoff-bound after clinching their spot Monday, but the Liberty have work left to do and could really use a victory tonight to avoid putting their backs against the wall heading into the weekend. 8 p.m. ET, Bally Sports Southwest/YES, watch on fuboTV

• MLS All-Stars vs. Liga MX All-Stars | It’s All-Star week in the MLS, and the league’s game this year pits top MLS stars against the best from Liga MX. Last year MLS won on penalties. 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, watch on fuboTV

HIDDEN GEM:

Minnesota Lynx at Phoenix Mercury

This game is about as consequential as it gets in the postseason push in the WNBA. Phoenix is currently on the right side of the playoff bubble, but sits just a game ahead of Minnesota in ninth place. A win and help today could leave Phoenix, which has had an emotionally draining season dealing with teammate Brittney Griner’s detainment in Russia, two games clear of the playoff cutline with two games left to play. On the other hand, Minnesota would move into a tie for the last spot in the postseason if it can find a way to win tonight.
