Top Two Seeds in Action As WNBA Playoffs Begin

Plus, Max Scherzer looks to keep rolling against the Braves.

The WNBA playoffs are here!

Postseason basketball is always fun, and the WNBA’s postseason format makes for plenty of drama. While we don’t have the single-elimination first round like in past years, these best-of-three series that get underway today can get turned on their heads quickly. Will we see some upsets early?

In addition to the WNBA postseason, today’s sports slate also features the start of the Little League World Series, Max Scherzer taking the ball for the Mets and action from the Women’s U-20 World Cup.

A quick note: Due to COVID-19, sports schedules are fluid and subject to change.

MUST WATCH:

Phoenix Mercury at Las Vegas Aces

Kelsey Plum and Riquna Williams for the Las Vegas Aces

The Aces finished the regular season strong, winning four straight games in the final eight days of the season to earn the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. Those four games proved why this team has a real chance to win it all: Vegas beat multiple playoff teams, scored 109 points against a loaded Storm squad and showed off an explosiveness offensively that few teams can match. It won’t be easy for the Mercury to hang around, especially without Skylar Diggins-Smith. But in a best-of-three series, anything can happen.

LINEUP:

• Little League World Series | It’s the first day of action from Williamsport at the Little League World Series, a summer staple on the sports calendar. The tournament now features 20 teams: 10 from the United States and 10 from the rest of the world. Games at 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. ET, ESPN, watch on fuboTV

• Women’s U-20 World Cup: U.S. vs. Japan | After losing 3–0 to the Netherlands on Sunday, the U.S. could be facing an early exit at this event if it can’t take three points from Japan, which currently sits at the top of their group. 7 p.m. ET, FS1, watch on fuboTV

• New York Liberty at Chicago Sky | Two late-season losses dropped the Sky to the No. 2 seed, which means they’ll draw a Liberty team that has given Chicago some tough tests this season. Late last month, New York beat the Sky 83–80 and led late in a second matchup between these two teams before falling 89–81. This won’t be an easy first-round matchup for the defending champs. 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2, watch on fuboTV

HIDDEN GEM:

New York Mets at Atlanta Braves

Why are the Mets so scary? They have two legitimate aces to trot out. One takes the mound tonight in Max Scherzer, who has been positively other-worldly since returning from the injured list last month. Just two weeks ago, he threw seven shutout innings while striking out 11 against these same Braves, and he followed that up with seven more masterly innings last time out against the Phillies over the weekend. Can the Braves get to Scherzer tonight, or will we see more of his dominance in the third game of this four-game set?
