U.S. Open: Serena Williams vs. Anett Kontaveit

Serena Williams

Serena Williams mostly cruised through her first-round match winning in straight sets against Danka Kovinić in front of an approving crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The competition level rises today against Anett Kontaveit, who is the No. 2 seed in the tournament but has struggled this year in Grand Slam competition. As top seeds go, drawing Kontaveit is rather favorable for Williams, though it still won’t be easy for her to advance. That said, another win tonight would lay the groundwork for a deep run in what is likely Williams’ final U.S. Open, which would be an incredible story to watch unfold.

Second-round coverage is already live on ESPN.

HIDDEN GEM:

Seattle Storm at Las Vegas Aces

Game 1 of this series was incredibly close throughout, but the Storm stole a road win behind 26 points from Jewell Lloyd and a sparkling 12-assist, 0-turnover outing from Sue Bird at point guard. But winning a series against an offense as explosive as the Aces’ won’t be easy, as evidenced by Vegas hanging 109 points on the Storm in these teams’ final regular-season meeting.
