Tiafoe vs. Alcaraz Headlines U.S. Open Semifinals

Plus, division races heat up in MLB’s final month.

The Bills opened the 2022–23 NFL season with a bang, cruising past the Rams on the road and looking like every bit of the Super Bowl favorite many believed they’d be. We get the rest of Week 1 in the NFL on Sunday, but until then we’ve got tennis, baseball and plenty of college football to look forward to.

Today’s headliner? Men’s semifinal action at the U.S. Open. Here’s what I’m watching today.

A quick note: Due to COVID-19, sports schedules are fluid and subject to change.

MUST WATCH:

U.S. Open: Men’s singles semifinals

Frances Tiafoe

Spots in Sunday’s men’s singles final are on the line today. It starts at 3 p.m. ET with Casper Ruud (who could be on his way to the No. 1 world ranking) taking on Karen Khachanov, who took down Nick Kyrgios in five sets Tuesday night. But the headliner comes at 7 p.m. ET, when young star Carlos Alcaraz takes on the story of the tournament: American Frances Tiafoe. Alcaraz has wowed with his court coverage and creative shots, while Tiafoe became the first player all year to beat Rafael Nadal in a Grand Slam and is looking to win his first Grand Slam on his home turf.

LINEUP:

• Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees | The Yanks’ division lead is down to 4.5 games, as Tampa Bay’s impressive run in August and early September has put some pressure on the Bronx Bombers at the top of the AL East. This series is the final three games the two teams will play against each other this season, so the Rays’ hopes of catching the Yankees are likely predicated on winning (and maybe sweeping) this weekend. 7:05 p.m. ET, Amazon Prime Video/Bally Sports Sun, watch on fuboTV

• College football: Louisville at UCF | UCF QB John Rhys Plumlee is one of the most electric athletes in college football and was used in a variety of ways at Ole Miss before transferring to the Knights. He’s one of SI’s top breakout picks for this season and gets his first big test tonight against Malik Cunningham and Louisville. 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2, watch on fuboTV

• Atlanta Braves at Seattle Mariners | These two teams have been among baseball’s best in the second half of the season. The Braves are right in the thick of the NL East race as they try to pass the Mets for the top spot, while the Mariners inch closer by the day to ending the league’s longest playoff drought. 9:40 p.m. ET, Apple TV+

HIDDEN GEM:

Cleveland Guardians at Minnesota Twins

No team seems intent on seizing control of the AL Central, but the Guardians, Twins and White Sox are all still in the mix for the top spot with under a month to play. Cleveland’s lead entering this weekend is 1.5 games, but that could vanish in a hurry. The Guardians have Cal Quantrill on the bump tonight, who has been outstanding of late. Can he silence the Twins’ lineup and help give Cleveland some breathing room?
