Russell Wilson Returns to Seattle to Cap the NFL’s Week 1

Plus, MLB playoff races heat up in the season’s final month.

We had upsets galore on a college football Saturday and plenty of wackiness on our first NFL Sunday. It was quite the weekend to sit back and watch football, and we wrap up a long weekend of fun with Monday Night Football tonight.

Also on today’s slate: MLB playoff races coming into full frame. There are huge games tonight for the AL Central and NL East races, as well as home-field advantage considerations in the AL Wild Card.

Here’s what I’m watching today.

A quick note: Due to COVID-19, sports schedules are fluid and subject to change.

MUST WATCH:

Denver Broncos at Seattle Seahawks

Russell Wilson on the Denver Broncos

After a chaotic first Sunday of the NFL season, we wrap things up in Week 1 tonight with Russell Wilson’s return to Seattle. The Seahawks are in rebuild mode after moving on from their star QB this offseason, but we’ve already seen multiple big upsets this weekend and this team is always tough to beat in Seattle. Wilson, who won a Super Bowl and went to nine Pro Bowls as a Seahawk, has a talented cast of receivers to get the ball to in Denver. A big win tonight would validate all the optimism in the Mile High City about this year’s Bronco squad.

This game also serves as the debut for Joe Buck and Troy Aikman on Monday Night Football. Jon Wertheim caught up with the broadcast duo in today’s Daily Cover story.

LINEUP:

• AS Roma at Empoli | Paulo Dybala and Roma have gotten off to a somewhat slow start to the new Serie A campaign, so three points on the road at Empoli would be a nice jolt. Empoli has ended its last four matches in draws, so it won’t be easy to break through. 2:45 p.m. ET, Paramount+

• Los Angeles Angels at Cleveland Guardians | A huge sweep of the Twins this weekend gave the Guardians a slightly more secure 2.5-game lead in the AL Central, but the White Sox are still right on Cleveland’s heels. Another series win this week would help get Cleveland some breathing room. 6:10 p.m. ET, Bally Sports West/Great Lakes/MLB Network, watch on fuboTV

• Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants | The Braves briefly jumped above the Mets at the top of the NL East but fell to 1.5 games back after a pair of losses this weekend. They’ll send Spencer Strider to the mound tonight to try to trim that deficit against the middling Giants. The 23-year-old Strider has risen to the occasion lately with 32 strikeouts in his last three starts. 9:45 p.m. ET, Bally Sports South/NBC Sports Bay Area/MLB Network, watch on fuboTV

HIDDEN GEM:

Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays

The race for the top spot in the AL wild-card standings is a hot one, particularly considering the implications for home-field advantage in the postseason. Tampa Bay and Toronto are separated by just a half-game for now, but the teams still have nine more meetings in the season’s final few weeks beginning with this five-game series. Both these teams have had impressive mid-season turnarounds, with the Jays getting going after moving on from manager Charlie Montoyo in July and the Rays finding their stride against the odds in August.
