Phillies Host Padres in Critical NLCS Game 3

Plus, the Warriors and Celtics look to build on 1–0 starts.

Touchdowns? On Thursday Night Football? What a treat!

We finally got an offensive explosion in a Thursday-night NFL game, with the Cardinals putting up 42 points en route to a win over the Saints to kick off Week 7. That headlined one of the busiest sports days of the year, and the action doesn’t slow down all weekend long.

Today, we’ve got a critical Game 3 in the NLCS, two high-profile NBA showdowns in the season’s first week and much more.

MUST WATCH:

Juan Soto and Josh Bell of the San Diego Padres

San Diego Padres at Philadelphia Phillies

The Padres were staring down a daunting 2–0 series deficit after going down by four runs early in Game 2 of this NLCS. But the San Diego offense, quiet for the first 10 innings of this series, finally came alive, with three home runs in the game and a breakthrough double from Juan Soto that swung momentum. If he heats up after a quiet start to the postseason, this Padres lineup is going to be incredibly tough to stop.

Now, the series heads to Philadelphia, where the Phillies were so good in the NLDS. But the Phillies’ offense will need to find a way to string hits together against Joe Musgrove, who has been magnificent in the playoffs for San Diego.

• Tampa Bay Lightning at Florida Panthers | This playoff rematch from a season ago should be a good one. These in-state rivals faced off last spring in a series that saw the Lightning sweep the top-seeded Panthers. But Tampa Bay has just one win in four tries to start the season, while the Panthers are off to a 3-1-0 start. 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN+/Hulu

• Boston Celtics at Miami Heat | Chris Mannix wrote after Tuesday’s opener that “the Jayson Tatum takeover is coming.” Fresh off leading the Celtics to the NBA Finals, Tatum opened his new season with 35 points, and teammate Jaylen Brown also poured in 35 to lift the Boston to a season-opening victory. 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, watch on fuboTV

• College football: UAB at Western Kentucky | Two Conference USA contenders face off tonight, both desperately needing a win to keep pace at the top of the standings. WKU is explosive on offense. Meanwhile, UAB’s calling card is its defense, which is one of the best in the country. 8 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network, watch on fuboTV

HIDDEN GEM:

Denver Nuggets at Golden State Warriors

Preseason turmoil didn’t seem to bother the Warriors on opening night, as Golden State looked like a team picking up right where it left off in its blowout win over the Lakers. Not only is the Warriors’ current core perhaps the best in the league, the Dubs are finally getting a healthy James Wiseman, the former No. 2 pick who could be a big part of the franchise’s future. Can two-time defending MVP Nikola Jokić help Denver knock off the defending champs tonight? Or will the Warriors make it a 2–0 start to the new season?
