Midway into the Liga MX apertura season, León and Mazatlán FC look to move up the standings. León is currently ninth in the standings with nine points and Mazatlán FC in 16th place with six points. Club León’s latest match was a 5-1 loss to Monterrey last Saturday. Scoring the lone goal in the match for León was Byron Castillo just after halftime. Germán Berterame and Arturo González scored all five goals for Monterrey.

Mazatlán's latest game resulted in a 2-1 win over Guadalajara for week seven of apertura play. Alfonso Sánchez scored first for Mazatlán at the 69-minute mark, but Angel Zaldívar tied things up for Guadalajara. Just before the end of regulation, Oswaldo Alanís put the game-winner in the back of the net allowing Mazatlán to walk away with three points. 

The last time these two clubs played each other was in the spring during the clausura season. The game resulted in a 2-1 victory for León. Santiago Colombatto and Santiago Ormeño scored for León while Roberto Meraz put one in for Mazatlán FC.
