Turkey's tenacious start to Euro 2024 qualifying will undergo a stiff test courtesy of Croatia

Group D leader Turkey will resume its qualification campaign for the 2024 European Championship at home to Croatia in an encounter that’s certain to have a major hand in deciding which team tops the pool. These two nations will have entered the qualification run as obvious favorites to contest first place in the hopes of securing a spot in Germany next year. However, Croatia has already suffered a slip after leaking a late equalizer at home to Wales on Saturday, while The Crescent Stars have established a two-point cushion at the summit following a 2-1 win in Armenia.

After losing all three of their group games at a European Championship for just the second time in five appearances at the finals, Turkey is on the redemption trail in its bid to make Euro 2024.

There’s also a renewed desire to succeed after manager Stefan Kuntz was unable to get his team to the 2022 World Cup, but victory in Armenia was the first step to making up for that miss.

The same couldn’t be said for Croatia, who finished third in Qatar last year but was sorely disappointed to surrender a late leveler at home to Wales over the weekend.

Andrej Kramaric put the host ahead in the first half as Zlatko Dalic’s side looked confident throughout, only to give up two valuable points to its guests as substitute Nathan Broadhead came on to deliver a debut goal:

Turkey and Croatia share plenty of history at major tournaments and have met six times since the turn of the century, including qualifying campaigns ahead of both Euro 2012 and the 2018 World Cup.

The Croats have racked up three competitive wins to Turkey’s one overall, though the Crescent Stars did eliminate their rivals via penalty shootout during the quarter-finals of Euro 2008.

Neither team has any new injury concerns affecting its selection ahead of the midweek clash, where three points could either see revive Croatia’s hopes or establish Turkey as the dominant force in the pool.
