Volvo Ocean Race broadcast coverage announced

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) NBC Sports Network will provide broadcast coverage in the U.S. of the Volvo Ocean Race while Outside Television will provide broadcast and digital coverage during the nine-month race that covers 40,000 nautical miles.

The race starts Oct. 11 from Alicante, Spain, and finishes in Gothenburg, Sweden, in June.

NBCSN's coverage will feature 39 half-hour shows airing primarily in late afternoon weekend slots beginning in late October.

Outside Television will air spots every Monday at 10:30 p.m. Eastern. Coverage on OutsideTelevision.com will includes digital streaming of the leg starts, in-port races, news features and live look-ins with the boats.

Each of the seven race crews will have a multi-media specialist who will shoot video, interview sailors and send footage back to the race headquarters daily via satellite.

The only U.S. stopover is in Newport from May 5-17.

Among the seven race crews will be the joint U.S.-Turkish entry Team Alvimedica based in Newport, led by American skipper Charlie Enright.
