Track official dies after being struck at meet

ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) Cornell University Police are investigating the death of a 75-year-old man who was struck by a thrown weight at a campus track meet.

The university says Douglas Koban of Endicott had been subcontracted to officiate at Saturday's track and field event at Barton Hall. The university says Koban was working in a caged area of an indoor track when he was struck in the head by a 35-pound ball thrown during warmups for the men's weight throw event.

Koban was treated by emergency personnel at the scene before being taken to Cayuga Medical Center, where he died on Sunday.

The university says in a statement released on Tuesday that no foul play is suspected.
