Ledecky just misses record, wins 4th gold at Arena Pro Swim

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Teen star Katie Ledecky did it again, bringing the Arena Pro Swim Series to a close Saturday with a charge at one of her world records.

The 17-year old from Bethesda, Maryland, dominated the 800-meter freestyle, touching in 8 minutes, 11.21 seconds, for her fourth gold medal in the three-day meet.

Olympic medalist Elizabeth Beisel of Saunderstown, Rhode Island, who won the 400 individual medley and was second in the 200 backstroke Friday, was well back in 8:39.76.

Ledecky was under world-record pace at 600 meters before coming up just short. She has the four fastest 800 times in history, topped by an 8:11.0

''I could really tell the crowd was getting into it about halfway through so I just wanted to give it my all,'' she said. ''I really wasn't hurting at the point it usually hurts when I'm having a bad swim so I knew I was a pretty good swim. ... shoot I should have gone 22 one-hundreds faster.''

Ledecky, who will swim for Stanford in the fall, won the 400 and 100 free Thursday and the 200 on Friday.

''I'm just setting high goals and working my hardest to meet them,'' she said. ''I'm really excited how this meet sets me up for the rest of the summer and hopefully for the next two years I can continue to improve off this.

Canadian Dominque Bouchard shocked Olympic great Natalie Coughlin in the 100 backstroke, winning in 1:00.68. Coughlin, a 12-time Olympic medalist, finished in 1:00.70. Bouchard also won the 100 backstroke Friday.

Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, FINA's 2014 World Swimmer of the Year, picked up her fourth medal and first gold in the 200 individual medley, her seventh final. Her time was 2:11.43.

In the 200 butterfly final, 15-year-old Cassidy Bayer of Alexandria, Virginia, and 17-year-old Katie McLaughlin of Dana Point, California, tied in 2:09.12.

Olympian Breeja Larson of Mesa, Arizona, won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.33.

In men's finals, 15-year old professional Andrew Seliskar of Alexandria, Virginia, won the 200 butterfly (1:55.92); Matt Grevers of Lake Forest, Illinois, took the 200 backstroke (53.27); Michael Andrew, Lawrence Kansas, the 200 butterfly (1:01.67); Conor Dwyer of Winnetka, Illinois, the 200 IM (1:59.56); and Connor Jaeger of Fair Haven, New Jersey, the 1,500 freestyle (15:16.17). Dwyer won the 200 free on Friday and Jaeger took the 400 free on Thursday. Jaeger, Grevers and Dwyer have all swam in the Olympics.
