Alabama city selected to host the 2021 World Games

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) Birmingham, Alabama, has been chosen to host the 2021 World Games.

The quadrennial, multi-sport event features more than 25 sports, many of which are not included in the Olympics, such as tug of war, sumo wrestling, water skiing and lacrosse.

The decision was announced Thursday by the International World Games Association.

Birmingham beat out rival bids from Lima, Peru, and Ufa, Russia.

Birmingham will be the first U.S. host since the inaugural World Games edition was held in Santa Clara, California, in 1981.

IWGA President Jose Peruena says ''we are happy to showcase our sports in Birmingham in July 2021, and we are sure that we will be offered optimal conditions for our sportsmen and women there.''

The 10th edition will be take place in Wroclaw, Poland, in 2017. The 2013 games were held in Cali, Colombia.
