Olympians Anderson and Meyer win 5k open water nationals

MIROMAR LAKES, Fla. (AP) Olympians Haley Anderson and Alex Meyer won 5-kilometer races at the U.S. open water national championships Sunday, earning berths in the world championships this summer.

Anderson surged over the final 300 meters to win in 1 hour, 1 minute, 51.291 seconds at Miromar Lakes Beach & Gold Club. Ashley Twichell of Fayetteville, New York, was second at 1:01.53.638.

Anderson, of Granite Bay, California, finished second in the 10k race Friday, qualifying her for another event at the world meet in Kazan, Russia, in July. Becca Mann, of Homer Glen, Illinois, finished third after winning the 10k.

Meyer, of Ithaca, New York, won his second straight national title in the 5k, touching in 57:53.940. David Heron of Mission Viejo, California, was second at 57:44.229 to earn a spot on the U.S. roster for Russia. He just missed qualifying in the 10k, finishing third by .006 seconds.
