Penalties given to 3 boats on Volvo Ocean Race

LISBON, Portugal (AP) Organizers of the Volvo Ocean Race say they have given penalty points to Team SCA, Dongfeng Race Team and MAPFRE for rule infringements during Leg 7.

The teams were given one penalty point each for sailing the wrong way during traffic separation schemes. Team SCA was given an extra penalty point for sailing into an exclusion zone.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing has the overall lead with 16 points, followed by Team Brunel of the Netherlands and Dongfeng of China, which both have 22 points. Team Brunel is second with a better in-port record.

Team Alvimedica and MAPFRE have 27 points, followed by Team SCA with 43 and Team Vestas Wind with 52.

Leg 8, from Lisbon to Lorient, France starts Sunday. The race finishes on June 27 in Gothenburg, Sweden.
