In this photo shot from above the court by Rob Griffith, England's Pamela Cookey battles with Australian goalkeeper Laura Geitz during the Netball World Cup in Sydney. Australia, the home team and defending champion, won 51-41 in their first qualification-round match, while England suffered its first loss in the tournament. Netball traces its history to basketball inventor James Naismith, and an early name of the game was women's basketball. Cookey had five goals in six attempts, while Geitz has three intercepts and seven deflections. Qualification-round matches continue for the rest of the week, with the semifinals and playoffs on Saturday.
