Bowe breaks women's 1,000 record in World Cup event

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) American Brittany Bowe broke the world record in the women's 1,000 meters Sunday in the World Cup speedskating event at the Utah Olympic Oval.

Bowe, from Ocala, Florida, finished in 1 minute, 12.18 seconds to break the mark of 1:12.51 set last week by teammate Heather Bergsma in Calgary Alberta.

On Sunday, China's Zhang Hong was second, and Bergsma, from High Point, North Carolina, third.

Russia's Pavel Kulizhnikov won the men's 500 meters in 34.13. He set the world record in the event on Friday with a time of 33.98.

The Chinese team of Zhang, Yu Jing and Li Qishi won the women's team sprint in 1:24.65. Canada's William Dutton, Alexandre St-Jean and Vincent De Haitre won the men's race in 1:17.75. Americans Kimani Griffin, Jonathan Garcia and Joey Mantia finished sixth.

Dutch skaters won both mass start events. Irene Schouten won the women's race in 8:27.19, and Arjan Stroetinga took the men's race in 7:19.76.
