Snowboard WCup in Austria canceled due to lack of sponsors

VIENNA (AP) Organizers of a snowboard World Cup in the Austrian resort of Jauerling have called off the two-yearly event after two main sponsors withdrew.

The head of the organizing committee, Alpine skiing great Michaela Dorfmeister, told national broadcaster ORF ''we didn't manage to fully finance'' the two parallel slaloms scheduled for Feb. 13-14.

According to Dorfmeister, ''sponsors are holding back a lot of money for the public viewings'' during football's 2016 European Championship in June and July, as Austria has qualified for the competition for the first time.

The event in Jauerling attracted 5,500 spectators during its first edition in 2012, but had to be moved to another resort because of unfavorable weather two years later.
