Bowe leads another American 1-2 at speedskating World Cup

INZELL, Germany (AP) Brittany Bowe beat Heather Richardson-Bergsma to win the women's 1,500 meters for the second American 1-2 in as many days at a speedskating World Cup event on Sunday.

Bowe, who also won the 1,000 meters on Saturday, clocked 1 minute, 54.68 seconds to edge her teammate by 0.26.

Marrit Leenstra of the Netherlands was third, 1.11 behind, followed by Ida Njatun of Norway and Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic.

Bowe leads Richardson-Bergsma by 20 points in the standings after three races.

Lee Sang-hwa of South Korea won the second of the weekend's sprints in 37.36, beating Richardson-Bergsma by 0.48 and Canada's Heather McLean by 0.66.

Lee, who also won the first sprint on Friday, extended her standings lead to 110 points over Richardson-Bergsma.

Artur Was of Poland won the second men's sprint in 34.65, edging Alex Boisvert-Lacroix of Canada by 0.09 and Kai Verbij of the Netherlands by 0.15. Another Canadian, Gilmore Junio, was fourth, 0.18 behind.

Pavel Kulizhnikov of Russia still leads the standings after winning the opening four sprints.

Denis Yuskov of Russia won the men's 1,500 meters in 1:44.21 - 0.99 seconds ahead of Dutch skater Kjeld Nuis and 1.04 ahead of American Joey Mantia.

Nuis leads the standings on 240 points, 20 ahead of Mantia and 40 ahead of Yuskov.

Irene Schouten of the Netherlands edged Ivanie Blondin of Canada by 0.02 seconds to win the women's mass start in 8:18.41. Park Do-young of South Korea was third, 0.20 behind.

Schouten leads the standings by 50 points from Blondin after three races.

Victory in the men's mass start went to Alexis Contin of France. Contin clocked 7:33.37 to beat Jorrit Bergsma of the Netherlands by 0.39 seconds and Fabio Francolini of Italy by 0.69.

Bergsma and compatriot Arjan Stroetinga share the standings lead on 200 points, 22 ahead of Francolini.
