CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) Poised to break the record for career downhill wins, Lindsey Vonn comfortably led the opening training session for a World Cup race in Cortina d'Ampezzo on Thursday.

Vonn clocked 1 minute, 39.12 seconds for a 0.60-second advantage ahead of overall World Cup leader Lara Gut.

Verena Stuffer of Italy was third, 0.70 back.

Vonn's American teammate Jacqueline Wiles had the second-fastest time but she missed several gates.

Another training session is scheduled for Friday before the downhill race Saturday and a super-G on Sunday.

Vonn is tied with Austrian great Annemarie Moser-Proell with 36 downhill wins. Last year in Cortina, Vonn broke Moser-Proell's record of overall wins with her 63rd victory.

Nicole Schmidhofer of Austria crashed while landing a jump and was slated to have surgery on her right knee.
