Warm weather forces shortened toboggan championships

CAMDEN, Maine (AP) Warm weather in Maine has forced the National Toboggan Championships to be postponed on Friday, shortened to one day and moved to a new location.

Officials say the event will be held Saturday, and it will be moved to the skill hill at Camden Snow Bowl instead of being held on the 400-foot chute.

Chairwoman Holly Edwards called the decision ''heartbreaking,'' but she said it was better to have a one-day event than to cancel it altogether.

Officials are concerned about thin ice and open patches of water on the frozen Hosmer Pond, where toboggans emerge from the chute after hitting speeds up to 40 mph. Edwards said some of the faster toboggans could've skidded over the ice and into the water.
