Germany's Arndt wins 4-man bob World Cup race, European gold

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (AP) Maximilian Arndt of Germany won a four-man bobsled World Cup race on Sunday to extend his standings lead and take the European title.

Arndt piloted his bob to a two-run combined time 0.18 seconds faster than Benjamin Maier of Austria, the surprise silver medalist.

Maier was fifth in the first run then fastest on the second time down the Olympia course to earn Austria's first European medal in the event for 17 years.

Bronze went to the Latvian bob driven by Oskars Melbardis, which trailed 0.27 behind Arndt.

The German driver, who won his third European title, extended his four-man World Cup lead over compatriot Francesco Friedrich with one round left.

The fastest speed Sunday of 145 kph (90 mph) was clocked by Nico Walther of Germany, who placed fifth.
