POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) A New York school district is closing schools so students and staff can attend a memorial service for an accomplished basketball player who was fatally shot last week.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports (pojonews.co/1P8cXgW) the city's board of education voted unanimously Monday to cancel classes Tuesday, when services will be held for 18-year-old Caval Haylett.

Poughkeepsie police say the teen was hit by gunfire as he stood with other people on a city street late Wednesday night, just hours after playing in an all-star game. Police don't believe he was the intended target.

No arrests have been announced.

Haylett was the leading scorer for Poughkeepsie High School this season. He scored 21 points in the Dutchess County Basketball Coaches Association Exceptional Seniors Game played earlier Wednesday.
