Peruvian swimmer Fiol banned 4 years for steroid doping

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) Swimming's governing body FINA says it banned Mauricio Fiol of Peru for four years after he tested positive for an anabolic steroid at last year's Pan American Games.

FINA says Fiol denied wrongdoing at a tribunal hearing and blamed the traces of stanozolol on contaminated horse meat sausages or a nutritional supplement.

His ban runs through July 11, 2019, FINA's doping panel ruled.

Fiol placed second in the 200-meter butterfly in a national record time at the championships held last July in Toronto, Canada.

He was already disqualified from his races last July and stripped of his silver medal by organizers PASO.
