Gut and Kilde win super-G titles at World Cup finals

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (AP) Lara Gut of Switzerland won the season-long super-G title on Thursday, while Aleksander Aamodt Kilde triumphed in the men's event, continuing Norway's domination of the discipline.

Gut, who had already secured the overall title, finished second behind Tina Weirather at the World Cup finals to overtake the injured Lindsey Vonn for the crystal globe.

''It's been a long season, a lot of ups and downs. I'm happy it's almost over and that I was able to win again the super-G title,'' Gut said. ''It wasn't as easy as two years ago. Then the season started so great and I was dominating in super-G. This time I was fighting for every point.''

Cornelia Huetter was third fastest to end the season fourth in the super-G standings, just behind Vonn, who was in St. Moritz after flying in to pick up her downhill title on Wednesday.

Weirather recorded her second World Cup victory of the season. She won another super-G in La Thuile, Italy, on Feb. 21.

''It was a tough day, the course was not easy,'' Weirather said. ''You could see that from the first nine girls and even the guys having problems, it was not easy to risk a lot but still stay on course.''

Seven skiers did not finish on the tricky Corviglia course, including five of the first eight racers.

Eight men failed to complete the run, with two of the title contenders among those to ski out.

Kilde almost lost it midway down the course but recovered to arrive with the same time as defending World Cup champion Kjetil Jansrud, punching the air in celebration after checking the clock.

''I was really nervous this morning.'' Kilde said. ''I knew that Kjetil was second so I knew I had to ski fast and everything was possible. I hammered it.''

The duo were 0.10 seconds behind Beat Feuz, with the Swiss skier securing a second straight World Cup win after he was fastest in Wednesday's downhill.

Kilde had 335 points heading into the race in St. Moritz, followed by the injured Aksel Lund Svindal with 310, Vincent Kriechmayr of Austria with 298 and Jansrud with 295. With a win worth 100 points, Andrew Weibrecht of the United States (91 points behind) and Carlo Janka of Switzerland (92) were also in contention.

However, Kriechmayr and Weibrecht missed a gate so Kilde, who was the last of the title contenders to start, needed only to finish sixth to secure the title.

Olympic champion Jansrud finished second in the discipline standings in a Norwegian 1-2-3. Svindal, who ended his season after knee surgery in January, was third in the standings.

It was a first crystal globe for the 23-year-old Kilde and comes in a discipline Norway has dominated, with its skiers winning the last four Olympic super-G titles and five of the eight in history.
