Papadakis and Cizeron win ice dance at Trophee de France

PARIS (AP) World champion Javier Fernandez landed three quads to post his second win of the season at the Trophee de France and qualify for the Grand Prix Final on Saturday.

Fresh from his win at the Rostelecom Cup last week in Russia, Fernandez led the field after Friday's short program and dominated the free at the Palais Omnisports.

Skating to Elvis Presley music, the Spaniard opened with a quadruple toe loop, landed a quadruple salchow-double toe loop and followed with a quadruple salchow in the second half of his program.

World and Olympic medalist Denis Ten of Kazakhstan was a distant second, 16.12 points back. Fourth after the short program, Adam Rippon was second in the free and edged out fellow American Nathan Chen for the bronze medal.

Evgenia Medvedeva also qualified for the Final by topping the women's field with 221.54 points ahead of fellow Russian Maria Sotskova and Wakaba Higuchi of Japan.

Earlier, world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron won the ice dance in their first figure skating grand prix of the season.

After opening a big lead in the short program, the French skaters were again in a class of their own in the free dance, and finished 18.92 points ahead of Americans Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue.

Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier finished third.

''We performed very well, especially given it was only the start of our season,'' Papadakis said.

The French pair returned to their home event after they were forced to withdraw from last year's edition following Papadakis' head injury.

In the pairs, Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot of Germany won with 210.59, and qualified for the Grand Prix Final from Dec. 7-11 in Marseille, France, in their first year on the circuit as a team.

The Trophee de France was the fourth event of the series. The Cup of China and the NHK Trophy this month will be the last chances for ice skaters to book their place at the Final.
