US women break world short-course 200 medley relay record

WINDSOR, Ontario (AP) Americans Ali DeLoof, Lilly King, Kelsi Worrell and Katrina Konopka broke the short-course world record in the 200-meter medley relay, finishing in 1 minute, 43.27 seconds Wednesday night in the FINA World Championships.

DeLoof led off in the backstroke with a split of 26.12, King extended the lead in the breaststroke, Worrell followed in the butterfly, and Konopka swam the freestyle.

''I'm ecstatic,'' DeLoof said. ''The coaches told us we had the chance to do something special tonight and we did. Our whole relay team is really happy.''

They broke the mark of 1:44.04 set by Denmark in Doha, Qatar, in 2014.

Shortly after the relay, Worrell set an American record in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.89. Worrell was second behind Hungary's Katinka Hosszu (2:02.15).
