America's top squash player has Achilles tendon surgery

NEW YORK (AP) America's top squash player, Amanda Sobhy, will be sidelined for the rest of the year after surgery on a torn Achilles tendon.

She hopes to return to the Professional Squash Association tour in December.

Sobhy had surgery last week after injuring her ankle in the semifinals of a tournament in Floridablanca, Colombia. She was leading 2-0 when she pushed off to retrieve a drop shot and fell to the court.

Sobhy says it felt like she'd been hit by her opponent's racket, and ''when she said no, I knew right away I had snapped my Achilles.''

A recent Harvard graduate from Sea Cliff, New York, Sobhy went 62-0 in her college career. She reached No. 6 in the world this year, the highest-ranked U.S.-born player ever to compete.
