Forty years ago this week at the Polo Grounds a left-handed Boston Red Sox pitcher named Babe Ruth, hitting against New York Yankee Pitcher Jack Warhop, belted a ball into the right-field stand for his first home run in the big leagues. On May 10,1918, Ruth played his first game as an outfielder. Before his career ended in 1935, he hit a record 714 home runs. His nearest rival: Jimmy Foxx, 534.
